Young Women in Public Affairs
( Y.W.P.A.)
Leaders of the
Future

Left to right: Sheila Watters, Marilynn
Horgan and our 2008 Young Woman in Public Affairs
recipient, Casey Overste.
The goal of the Young Women in Public Affairs
(YWPA) Program is to encourage more young women to
participate in public and political life by
recognizing a young woman's age (age 16-20)
commitment to the volunteer sector, evidence of
volunteer leadership achievements and a dedication
to the advancement of the status of women. Applicants are asked to reflect on their lives,
their commitment to the communities in which they
live, and the role models that have inspired them to
become involved in their community or in a specific
prospective career. The Zonta International
Young Women in Public Affairs program looks to the
young women of today for the leaders of tomorrow. The Club winner receives a cash award and her entry is then forwarded for judgment at an Area level. Should she win that, the next step is at District level where the recipients receive $US500 and then on to International level where the recipients receive $US1000.
Applications close in October of each year.
Presentations are usually made in December.

Amelia Earhart Fellowship

Amelia Earhart, the famous aviatrix: an honoured Zontian.
The
Amelia Earhart Fellowship is one of oldest awards
established by Zonta International. The award
supports women pursuing a PhD in aerospace-related
sciences and engineering. It was established in
1938 to honour Amelia Earhart, a Zontian and the
first woman to fly solo over the Atlantic Ocean.
The fellowships are currently worth US$10,000 each.
Successful first time applicants may also apply for
a second fellowship.
A
member of the Zonta Club of Swan Hills Inc, a
recipient of the Amelia Earhart Fellowship award on
three occasions in 1970, 1971 and 1972 and a former
member of the Zonta International expert panel of
judges selecting AEF winners, Professor Carolina
(Carla) Fasano, offers a few suggestions to
facilitate the task for prospective applicants:
The
fellowships are highly competitive. Applicants from
the best universities apply. Successful candidates
are in the top few percentiles of students. They are
not only achieving academically but also have
interests and involvement in broader social and
other areas.
