2009 Zonta Swan Hills Studies Assistance Grant Recipient
Margret Garang

The winner of the 2009 Zonta Swan Hills Studies Assistance Grant Margret Garang from Cyril Jackson College.

Margret has attended Cyril Jackson College since her arrival from Sudan as a refugee in 2006.  She completed Year 11 in 2008, and is studying Year 12 this year, with the aim of completing high school and following her ambition to attend University and become a lawyer.

At the completion of Year 11 at Cyril Jackson, Margret received certificates  for 100%  attendance and committed  effort in all  her subjects for the year, as well as the subject award for Law and a Certificate of Competency  in Information Technology.

We believe that through the Studies Assistance Grant, Zonta can really make a difference and actually advance and improve the educational status of women in a very meaningful and direct way.  Margret is a very worthy winner and hopefully it will make a positive impact on her Year 12 studies and future career choices.  The Studies Assistance Award is for $500, and this  money will be held in trust at  CJ’s for Margret to access for any expenses related to her  studies.

Margret was presented with the cheque for $500 at the Awards Evening held by Zonta Swan Hills, a gold rose pin, and flowers by Alison Cawley.  Margret was also presented with a certificate at the End of Year Awards at Cyril Jackson College.

At the Awards Evening in November 2008, Cardi Shearer represented Cyril Jackson College.  She spoke of the significance of the Studies Assistance Grant and provided an update on the progress of previous winners. She thanked the Club, on behalf of the Cyril Jacksons College, for the grant.  She said it helped the winners to buy books, graphic calculators, etc.  In addition, it was an honour, and meant a great deal to the families of the winners (especially those from Africa), for the students to be recognised for their effort.
