Birthing Kit Workshop -
19th May 2007
Girl Guides from Hampton Park Adventure and
Morley Guides joined members from the Zonta Club of Swan Hills for a Birthing Kit Workshop on May 19th 2007, at the Scout Hall in Lockridge. More than 2,000 kits were packed. 1,000 were sent to Madagascar and a further 1,000 were sent to Somalia via Australian Doctors for Africa.
More than 500,000 women die annually in childbirth, 99% of these in developing
countries. For every woman who dies in childbirth probably 30 incur injuries and infections. A Zonta Birthing Kit, costing as little as $1.60 to produce, consists of a sheet of plastic, a piece of soap, 1 pair of latex gloves, 3 pieces of cord, 1 scalpel blade and some gauze squares, all contained in a small plastic press-seal bag.
